Hari Raya Haji is a significant day for Muslims! Read on to find out more about the festival
Hari Raya Haji falls on the 10th day of the final month of the Islamic calendar and is celebrated across four days. It is a festival where Muslims honour the faith of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham). Unlike Hari Raya Puasa which signifies forgiveness and strengthening of bonds, Hari Raya Haji is known to be the Festival of Sacrifice, or Eid Al Adha, and is celebrated on a much smaller scale in Singapore.
Although it is not compulsory, Muslims may choose to fast on the eve of Hari Raya Haji. They believe that by doing so, it can erase their past and future sins.
In the morning, muslims would gather at mosques for prayers. After that, they will also witness Korban, a ritual where animals are sacrificed. This ritual is closely monitored and the slaughtering of animals is only done by certified butchers at registered Korban centres. These centres are frequently checked to ensure that the animals are handled with care and humanity.
In the past, Singapore has been importing livestock from Australia for Korban. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, mosques in Singapore have to adapt and make arrangements for the yearly ritual to be carried out in Australia instead.
After the morning prayers and rituals, families will usually gather to share a meal together.
However, with the current pandemic situation, gatherings with loved ones have to be limited. This can greatly lower the mood of the festival, but fret not because our free delivery service got you covered!
